Ancestral Patterns: Why You Keep Repeating What You Never Chose

Ancestral Patterns: Why You Keep Repeating What You Never Chose

I have been doing this work for over thirty years, and there is a moment that repeats itself in nearly every session. Someone names a fear, or a heaviness, or a pattern they cannot explain, and partway through telling me about it they stop and say, “This isn’t even about my life right now.” They are right. It usually isn’t.

What they are up against is an ancestral pattern. Not a personal failing. Not something broken in them. A program, written before they were born. It is still running. The danger it was built for is not.

I worked with a woman last year who panicked every time she had extra money in her account. Not tight money. Extra. She would give it away, spend it fast, find some reason to make it disappear before it could sit there and feel dangerous. We traced it back. Her grandmother had lived through a time when having money meant being noticed, and being noticed meant being unsafe. My client had never lived through anything like that herself. She was still running the program anyway.

What Is an Ancestral Pattern, Really?

An ancestral pattern is a belief, an emotion, or a way of coping that was written into your family line before you had any say in it.

Your grandmother lived through scarcity, so she learned to hoard, to fear lack, to never quite trust there would be enough. She did not sit your mother down and teach her this directly. She lived it, and your mother absorbed it just by being close to her. Now, decades later, here you are, still gripping tightly to money or love or safety, even though nothing in your life today is asking you to.

You did not write it. You inherited it.

How Ancestral Patterns Show Up in Everyday Life

These patterns rarely announce themselves. They just run underneath everything else, quietly steering the wheel. In my practice, I see a few common ones over and over.

  • Relationship patterns. You keep choosing partners who cannot fully show up, echoing a dynamic your parents or grandparents lived.
  • Money patterns. You either overspend to prove you are not “less than,” or you hoard because of a survival belief passed down, not one you formed yourself.
  • Self-worth patterns. A quiet belief that you have to earn your place, earn love, earn the right to take up space.
  • Safety patterns. A persistent sense of danger, hypervigilance, or bracing for something bad to happen, even when your life is genuinely stable.
  • Emotional patterns. Grief, numbness, or over-responsibility that does not match anything happening in your actual life right now.

If you have ever thought, “why do I do this, I know better,” that gap between knowing and doing is the program talking. Not you.

Why Willpower and Insight Alone Don’t Fix It

Understanding a pattern is not the same as releasing it. One lives in your mind. The other lives in your body.

You can journal about it. You can talk about it in therapy. You can name it perfectly. And still feel stuck. That is not because you are doing it wrong. It is because the pattern was never stored in your thinking mind. It is stored in your subconscious mind, your nervous system, your lineage. You cannot out-think a program. Talking about a knot does not untie it. You have to actually work with the knot.

This is where shamanic ancestral healing becomes so powerful. It doesn’t ask you to think your way out. It works directly with the subconscious mind, so the pattern can actually loosen and release, not just be understood.

How Ancestral Healing Works in My Practice

In my Sacred Roots Shamanism sessions, we go beneath the surface story to the root of where a pattern began. Sometimes that is a specific ancestor. Sometimes it is simply a repeated family theme, generation after generation.

The process generally includes:

  1. Identifying the pattern. We name what keeps repeating and trace how far back it might go. This often starts with a simple question: does this fear, belief, or emotion actually match your life right now, or does it feel older than you? Most people are surprised by how quickly the answer becomes clear once they slow down enough to ask it.
  2. Connecting to the lineage. We meet the energy at its source, with honor, not blame. This is not about pointing fingers at a parent or grandparent. Most people who pass down a pattern were simply doing what they needed to survive their own circumstances. We approach this part with compassion for everyone involved, including the ancestor who first carried it.
  3. Releasing what isn’t yours to carry. This is the heart of the work. Not forcing, not forgetting, but truly letting go. This often looks like a physical or energetic release, something you can feel in your body, not just understand in your mind. Some people describe it as a weight lifting, a breath they didn’t know they were holding, or a sudden sense of space where there used to be tightness.
  4. Reclaiming what’s yours. What’s left when the inherited weight is gone is closer to who you really are. This step matters as much as letting go in the first place. Once a pattern loosens, there’s room to ask what you truly desire and believe, separate from what was handed to you. That’s often where the real transformation begins.

This work is often deeply moving. My client with the money pattern told me afterward that for the first time, having extra didn’t feel dangerous. It just felt like extra.

This Work Meets You Wherever You Are

You don’t need years of therapy behind you, or an established spiritual practice, to begin this kind of healing. If you’ve simply noticed a pattern that feels bigger than your own life story, bigger than something you could have created on your own, that’s enough. That noticing is the beginning.

You don’t have to have language for what you’re feeling, and you don’t have to understand where it comes from before we start. All you need is the willingness to look a little closer at what keeps repeating, and to trust that it doesn’t have to stay that way.

The Key Takeaway

You are not broken. You are not failing at life. You are carrying a program that was never yours to run. Ancestral healing helps you set it down, so you can live from your own truth instead of an inherited one.
